Before receiving GP Certified accreditation, recyclers must undergo a comprehensive assessment to ensure compliance with quality, safety, and sustainability standards. This evaluation verifies that recycling processes meet ethical, environmental, and operational benchmarks, ensuring high-grade recycled plastics suitable for FMCG applications.
Our assessment process is designed to support recyclers in adopting best practices while providing FMCG companies with credible, independently verified recycled materials. By maintaining strict standards, GP Certified strengthens industry trust, promotes responsible recycling, and drives a more sustainable circular economy.

Application and preliminary assessment.
A sorter or recycler seeking ICI Certification must complete an online application on the ICI website, providing key business details such as company name, location, operational facility size, equipment list, staff details, types of plastics processed, and the extent of operations (e.g., sorting only, sorting and cleaning, or full recycling).
The applicant must also upload supporting documents for verification, including a Business Registration Certificate, an Environmental Protection Licence (EPL) from the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), and a consent letter signed by an authorised representative. Once submitted, ICI evaluates the validity of the documents and assesses the feasibility of certifying the existing process.
The Island Climate Initiative (ICI) will conduct an on-site visit to verify the information provided in the application, assess operations, and document the current recycling processes. During this visit, ICI will generate key documents, including a Process Flow Diagram, an evaluation of the current process rating and grade, a list of available documents, and an overview of the future investment plan from the owner or Board of Directors.
Additionally, the expected grade of recycled plastics will be recorded. Based on this assessment, ICI will conduct a process and gap analysis, comparing the current rating with the target grade. A joint action plan will then be developed, addressing infrastructure and machine technology requirements, training needs, and Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) considerations. The applicant must provide relevant details to support the development of this action plan, including the expected grade of recycled plastics and potential investment plans.
Training and Process Setup
The applicant is responsible for implementing recommended process improvements, guiding workers to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), and assisting in the evaluation process. ICI supports the applicant by providing guidance on process improvements, conducting training sessions, and carrying out periodic evaluations, which include sample testing, document reviews, and environmental testing. If the applicant meets the required standards during these evaluations, the Island Climate Initiative will recommend them for the final auditing process.
Certification and Audit Setup
The applicant is responsible for facilitating the auditing process. The auditor conducts a pilot audit to identify any non-conformities and provides feedback for improvement.
Following this, a final audit is carried out, and if the applicant meets the required standards, the auditing firm grants certification, allowing the use of the Green Label. If the standards are not met, a Non-Conformities Report is issued, outlining necessary corrections. To ensure continued compliance, periodic and spot audits will be conducted to maintain process standards.
